Josh Agle (probably better known as Shag, contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last) is a painter, illustrator and designer working in Southern California. His initial intention to establish a career as an illustrator-for-hire was sidetracked when his original paintings began to garner considerable attention from galleries and collectors. Since his first solo gallery show in 1997, Shag has had successful solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia.
Artist statement:
” Conspicuous Consumption is a collection of paintings intended to clarify one of the central themes running through my work: the acquisition of beautiful, frivolous, aesthetically pleasing and status -advancing objects is not an affliction on society. Art, jewelry, fine clothing and lavish dwellings have been a part of human existence since our cave -dwelling ancestors first realized that natural materials could be rearranged into new and beautiful things. These appealing objects have added to wealth and culture of civilizations for thousands of years.
In addition, the consumption of food and drink, and the practice of pleasurable activities, contribute to the meaning, importance, and singularity of human existence. Although irony plays a large part in my art, I hope that it won’t detract from my sincere belief that an ascetic life is missing a substantial part of what makes one’s time on this planet worthwhile.”
